Wang

Trompe l'oeil was Alexander Wang's big talking point for pre-fall. Menswear fabrics and strict tailoring were the collection's dominant motifs, but in his hands, classic houndstooth patterns and glen plaids became burnout sweaters and intarsia knit dresses, while jackets layered in transparent mesh were slit at the collar and lapels, the better to weave your long hair through. The concept extended to accessories: Mesh booties were designed to look like old-fashioned seamed panty hose, and the season's new clutch was a sunglasses case blown up to exaggerated proportions.

As wacky and musical as all that sounds, the results were seriously chic. Less "street" than his latest runway show, the vests, pencil skirts, and pants had the feeling of wear-to-work pieces for girls who have the good fortune to work in creative fields. (The leather harnesses on the jackets and coats, for the record, were 100 percent removable.) Just don't call what Wang does "downtown." Months away from opening a 5,000-square-foot store in Beijing, as he is, he shouldn't have to remind anyone that his is a global brand. One in which handbags play a significant role. Rocco fans will be pleased to hear that there's a smaller version with a lunchpail-style zipper that's been dubbed "the Rockie" in the new lineup.

T by Alexande Wang has been more than just a T-shirt line from the start, but the designer continues to push the boundaries of his less expensive collection. New for pre-fall were leather separates, often mixed with ponte jersey to keep prices hovering around the $500 sweet spot. He added more wovens to the mix, too. Button-downs and shirtdresses, for example, were streamlined takes on the tricked-out tops in his tailoring-focused signature line. At the other end of the sexy spectrum was a stretchy burgundy dress with mesh insets at the hips that also had its precedent in his big-sister brand. All that was missing were the sharply cut blazers. For that kind of quality tailoring, Wang fans will have to turn to the main collection.

The Row pre-fall

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen began The Row with a T-shirt, but they might be even better known for their leather leggings. Plenty of labels were doing them back in their heyday a few years ago, but The Row's were the ne plus ultra. Well, they got a reinvention today that will have girls saving their pennies and signing their names on wait lists once more. Equestrian-meets-aristocrat is the message this season, so the leggings had jodhpur-like details, with ribbing on the calves, buttons on the ankle, and pointy hems that extended over the front of the models' feet. We were instantly smitten, and we don't even like horses.

The sisters described their approach to pre-fall as item-driven. There were at least two contenders for "It dress"—a long-sleeve wool number with a fuller skirt, navy on top and charcoal gray on bottom, and a similar trompe l'oeil style rendered in a stretch poplin stripe above the waist and a black stretch wool below it. On the tailoring front, they offered a fitted velvet pantsuit alongside a looser, easier style in wool with a tie-front jacket and culottes cropped below the knee. And no collection from the Olsens is complete without a fur. The standout here was a coat made from different types of fox, some sheared, some not, with pops of coral and pink. A matching bag almost, but not quite, stole the show in their display, understated opulence being the order of the day when it comes to their handbags. Get this, their new crocodile bucket bag comes with an optional webbed cotton strap.

Azul, rojo y negro.
